Version routes and procedures

Released work must retain the route and procedure version it was issued against. Updating tomorrow’s standard must not rewrite yesterday’s production history.

Set target time with tolerance

A single rigid duration often creates false alarms. Use a target duration and a deliberate tolerance for each route operation, supported by an overall required-by or shipping date.

Capture execution where it happens

Record acceptance, start, pause, hold, completion, quantities, labour or resource time, material usage, scrap and rework at the work centre. Delayed retrospective entry weakens WIP, forecasting and operational costing.

Make handoffs explicit

Completing one operation does not prove the next section has received the work. Use pass and acceptance events to show where responsibility currently sits.

Structure exceptions, do not bury them

Holds, failed checks, out-of-tolerance measurements, shortages, scrap and rework should use controlled reasons and consequences rather than disappearing into free-text notes.

Control WIP by queue and age

Total WIP alone is not enough. Review incoming queues, unaccepted transfers, active work, held work, ageing, overdue operations and work waiting for quality or approval.

Use QR codes to remove friction

QR technology should shorten the path to the correct live record. It should not become a separate data model or a mandatory step where queue selection is faster.

Integrate without duplicating system ownership

ERP, MRP, payroll, inventory or accounting systems may own orders, commercial master data, approved rates and formal financial records. The execution layer should own actual route events, QCP results, WIP, timing, usage, cost drivers and handoff history.

Roll out, measure and improve

Begin with one route or product family, confirm operator usability and information quality, then expand. Do not digitise an unclear process across an entire enterprise at once.

Calculate operational cost from execution data

Production cost should follow the work actually performed. Use approved rates with recorded labour or resource time, material usage, machine time, scrap, rework, subcontract processing and permitted direct-cost inputs.

Build trustworthy execution data

Every useful forecast, operational-cost view and improvement decision depends on disciplined shop-floor events.
